‘Pain and Gain’ Tops Weekend Box Office

The high-testosterone action-comedy “Pain & Gain” powered its way to the top of the North American box office in its debut, knocking a Tom Cruise sci-fi adventure into second place, according to final figures released today.

“Pain & Gain,” starring Mark Wahlberg, earned $20.2 million between Friday and Sunday to snag the top spot, according to Box Office.

Cruise’s “Oblivion” collected $17.8 million, pushing its two-week total to $65.1 million.

The Jackie Robinson bio-pic “42” earned another $10.7 million, while the star-studded comedy “The Big Wedding” debuted in fourth place with $7.6 million, followed in fifth by the animated “The Croods,” which earned $6.7 million and pushed its six-week total to $163.1 million.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” ($3.7 million); “Scary Movie V” ($3.4 million); “Olympus Has Fallen” ($2.9 million); “The Place Beyond the Pines” ($2.7 million); and “Jurassic Park 3-D” ($2.4 million).
