Barbara Lazaroff To Once Again Hold Passover Sedar At Spago
Barbara Lazaroff, co-owner of the famous Spago restaurant, is once again holding a Passover Seder at the restaurant—her 30th—on Tuesday, April 15.
The annual event benefits MAZON, The Jewish Response to Hunger, which helps feed people in the L.A. community.
“I created this event at the original Spago in Hollywood when I realized there were others like myself who felt nostalgic and detached from their families as life had become more fragmented,” Lazaroff said. “Most of my family was back East at the time.”
The event has “become a warm and delicious tradition at Spago‚ and of course in addition to the service and the delightful addition of the West Los Angeles Children’s Choir (they sing two specially prepared songs at every seder), the guests truly enjoy the extraordinary cuisine and their package to-go-home of oven-baked matzah and macaroons we make at Spago,” Lazaroff added.
Over the years, event guests have included actors and actresses including: Rita Moreno, Melissa Manchester and Lainie Kazan, along with studio heads and directors.
Guests are about 40 percent non-Jewish, Lazaroff reports and “many people have experienced their first seder at Spago—where they get a sophisticated introduction to Jewish cuisine.
“I always believe if you open your traditions and celebrations to all, no matter your religion, background or customs, it will allow closer understanding among all people,” Lazaroff added.
