Some 500 people gathered at the Beverly Gardens Park Lily Pond Wednesday morning to join Hawthorne Principal Kathy Schaeffer and Mayor Lili Bosse on a celebratory “Walk to School” in honor of Hawthorne’s centennial year.
“The spirit, passion and enthusiasm was so exciting as hundreds of kids, parents and pets cheered with community school spirit,” Bosse observed.
The six-block walk to school this morning, which included hundreds of students, along with parents, school staff and other community leaders and supporters, was indeed a joyous event. Students wore special “100 Year” celebration glasses, hats and T-shirts. School spirit chants and smiles abounded.
The walk was also a prelude to a very special event happening on Sunday – when from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the school will host its centennial carnival.
The carnival will have an authentic stage coach, a petting zoo, giant slide, merry-go-round, train, bumper cars and other rides and games with prizes. And of course, lots of food to eat! At noon, a giant birthday cake will be served after singing the traditional birthday song.
All Hawthorne alumni in attendance will receive a special gift.
