These days, the average Major League Baseball player’s salary hovers just over $4 million, but life isn’t quite as easy for those in the Minor Leagues.

Down on the farm, players are often forced to take side jobs to make ends meet. According to a March report from USA Today, while many draftees signbig-money deals with lucrative bonuses, the entry-level salary can sometimes be as low as $1,100 a month for some minor leaguers.

So imagine what that check must have looked like in the 1940s.
