(CNS) – Jurors acquitted or deadlocked on assault and other charges against a man accused of attacking a soap opera actor in a Hollywood parking lot but convicted him of misdemeanor DUI, and prosecutors will announce tomorrow whether to retry him on three counts.
Dusan Lilic, 28, was acquitted Friday of all felony counts stemming from the alleged Nov. 27, 2014, attack on actor Corey Sligh.
The panel convicted him of the lesser DUI charge, but found him not guilty of assault with a deadly weapon, DUI causing injury, driving with a .08 blood-alcohol content causing injury, battery with serious bodily injury and assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury.
Today, the jurors — tasked with deciding whether Lilic was guilty of misdemeanor simple assault, simple battery and driving with .08 blood-alcohol content — told the judge they were hopelessly deadlocked. According to a court clerk, the panel was leaning toward acquittal.
The judge declared a mistrial on the three misdemeanor counts and set a hearing for tomorrow, at which prosecutors may announce they plan to retry Lilic on those charges. Alternatively, Lilic could be sentenced for misdemeanor DUI.
Prosecutors said Sligh was walking with a girlfriend to deliver Thanksgiving dinner to a friend when they saw a car being driven erratically in the parking lot. Lilic allegedly opened the car door, striking Sligh, after the actor asked him to stop and leave.
In a civil suit against the defendant and a second man who remains a fugitive, Sligh said Lilic “gunned the car” at him, knocking him to the ground.
Sligh said as he stood, dazed, he saw the two men running at him. They punched and kicked him and Lilic “stomped with his full body weight” on the actor’s arm, shattering and snapping bones, Sligh alleged.
Nikola Ilic, 24, was charged along with Lilic and faces one count each of battery with serious bodily injury and assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury. When he failed to appear in court on Sept. 23, 2015, the judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
Sligh — who has appeared on the CBS soap opera “The Young and the Restless” as a bartender and a waiter — said in the 2015 suit that his arm remained “weak and disfigured” and prevented him from taking acting roles offered.
