In a 101-page response brief filed Friday, attorneys for Karen Christiansen, the former Beverly Hills Unified School District Chief Facilities Officer, argued that she and her company were not subject to the reach of Government Code Section 1090, like other district employees, because she was being paid as a consultant. As such, the brief argues, last year’s verdict against her, which now has her owed in excess of $22 million, should stand.
