Beverly Hills News – Santa Monica Blvd. Reconstruction Set to Begin Jan. 11
Posted: Wednesday, January 4, 2017 – 1:13 PM
The North Santa Monica Boulevard reconstruction project is finally set to begin Jan. 11 on the western side of the City.
The project will take 18 months to conclude, including the rebuilding of the roadway between Doheny Drive and Wilshire Boulevard to replace the century-old drainage and install fiber-optic cable and new street lighting.
The project will be built in east and west segments with four phases for each segment designed to minimize traffic disruption and maximize business access.
Throughout most of the project four lanes of traffic will remain open as work is conducted in the curb lane and sidewalk areas. However, about one-third of the project will be while the roadway is removed and replaced, during which two or three lanes will remain open. During those times, traffic will detour onto South Santa Monica Boulevard and the traffic will be available for southbound traffic.
Street parking along South Santa Monica Boulevard between Beverly Drive and Wilshire Boulevard will be temporarily removed. South Santa Monica Boulevard will be reconfigured to provide a five-lane cross-section, with two lanes in each direction and a left-turn lane.
When completed, the project will have ADA-compliant ramps, LED street lights, relocated and upgraded traffic signals, fiber optics, widening and landscaping on the south side, and bi0-swales on the north side.
Bio-swales are landscape elements that capture storm water run-off and filter pollutants and silt through natural landscape features before the water is released into the watershed. These bi0-swales will help the City meet county requirements for reducing storm runoff and pollutants that flow into the Santa Monica Bay.
An extensive outreach program is underway to inform the community about construction updates throughout the duration of the project. Expect mailers, social media messages signage and notifications of upcoming meetings.
The next community meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 31. There will be one held at the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce Board Room at 8:30 a.m., 9400 Santa Monica Blvd. 2nd Floor, and one held at the City Hall Municipal Gallery 7-10 p.m.
