Joan Mangum’s Society Scene—BH Restaurants Score Big In Global Cuisine Awards

The area’s top restaurateurs and chefs gathered at the Beverly Hilton to celebrate the 2018 Global Cuisine Awards presented by Global Talents Media Group. Sponsored by Lala Noodle, the awards honored many of L.A.’s restaurants for their contributions to the growing culinary scene. 

Beverly Hills was well represented among the winners as Spago, co-owned by Wolfgang Puck and Barbara Lazaroff, was named Best American Restaurant while CUT by Wolfgang Puck, located in The Beverly Wilshire, was saluted as the Best Steakhouse.

Mr. Chow on Camden Drive won Best Chinese Restaurant and The District by Hannah An on nearby West Third Street took honors as the Best Vietnamese Restaurant to the delight of the An family of Beverly Hills’ Crustacean fame.

Entertainment was provided by Bian Lian Chinese Opera show with brightly colored costumes and a touch of magic, plus Christmas carols by the X Factor’s RoxXy Montana and LALA Girls.

Earlier that day, the 2nd annual Sino-U.S. Cultural Industry Summit—The Future of the Culinary Industry­–was held in the Hilton ballroom with food-focused discussion from many of the same notable tastemakers.

The first panel, moderated by culinary travel writer and founder of Fork In The Road Media Krista Simmons, explored culinary trends diving deeply into topics like social media and plant-based menus. Adam Fleischman, founder of Umami Restaurant Group, along with Hannah An of The District, and Amir Vahdani, director of Food and Beverage at the Four Seasons, were among those exploring the 2018 landscape.

Cooking in LA’s Melting Pot was moderated by The Travel Channel’s Jeff Miller, and featured chefs such as Nguyen Tran of the famed underground restaurant Starry Kitchen/Button Mash, Ricardo Zarate of Rosaline, and Top Chef alum Nyesha Arrington of the newly opened Native in Santa Monica. These diverse culinarians explored the topic of street food as well as shared their favorite places to eat when they aren’t in the kitchen.

Rounding out the day, the trending topic of sharing was discussed. Moderated by Roy Ying, honorary chairman of U.S. Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, the Culture of Sharing panelists included Theresa Lin of Chinese Regional Cuisine, hospitality designer and founder of Preen Inc. Alexis Readinger and author and celebrity chef Lulu Powers.

The summit plays an intricate role in U.S -China relations by providing a platform for communication and collaboration thus creating synergy between American and Chinese corporations. Among those honored at the afternoon event were California State Treasurer John Chiang and Congressman Ted Lieu.
