A special Walk with the Mayor Lili Bosse Monday will kick off Celebrate Kindness Week by helping to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia, offering BHUSD students Community Service credit for participating, and as a special bonus, joining this walk is NFL Hall of Fame Wide Receiver Terrell Owens!
A six-time Pro-Bowl selection, Owens holds several NFL records for his 16 seasons and 15,934 career receiving yards. He played with the 49ers, Eagles, Cowboys, Buffalo Bills, and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Seems like a lot of good reasons to get the kids out early and Walk with the Mayor on a day off from school!
The Human Relations Commission and the Teen Advisory Committee will also join the walk to hand out “Celebrate Kindness” pins and pledge cards to participants in honor of Beverly Hills first “Celebrate Kindness Week.”
The walk will visit Sunrise of Beverly Hills and the Alzheimer’s Association California Southland Chapter.
This walk, said Bosse, is about celebrating kindness, and one kind thing kids can do is visit residents who suffer from Alzheimer’s and related dementias. These diseases affect more than just the patient: whole families are impacted by loved ones suffering from the disease.
The disease affects more than 15 million Americans caring for people with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
The Alzheimer’s Foundation is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S.; more than five million Americans live with Alzheimer’s, which is predicted to affect as many as 16 million people by 2050. The cost of caring for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia is estimated at $259 billion in 2017. Nearly one in three seniors die with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
“Sunrise of Beverly Hills offers industry-leading memory care through our Reminiscence Program. We support our residents with Alzheimer’s, Dementia or other forms of memory loss in a safe, secure and familiar environment using the Validation Method. We also provide care programs to seniors with milder forms of memory loss, as well as to residents who experience symptoms earlier in life,” said Erika Henson, Volunteer and Activity Coordinator for Sunrise. The facility, located in the heart of Beverly Hills, provides a caring support community to Beverly Hills’ residents and peace of mind to their families.
Beverly Hills Mayor Lili Bosse has made it her mission to make Beverly Hills the world’s healthiest city, beginning with her renowned weekly Walks with the Mayor. The walks are an opportunity for residents and community members to interact and network with each other, local businesses and places of interest while enjoying a healthy walk and talk with the City’s Mayor.
Monday, a school holiday, is a perfect opportunity for local kids to take a Walk with the Mayor and get Community Service credits at the same time. Bringing awareness to the disease and those who care for people who suffer from the effects of Alzheimer’s and dementia is part of the Beverly Hills Healthy City initiative. It is a wonderful way to celebrate kindness, get Community Service points, meet a real NFL Hall of Famer, and make the lives of the City’s elderly just a little bit happier. This is a win-win for all!
To join Walk with the Mayor just be on the steps of City Hall on Crescent Drive at 8:30 a.m. with your walking shoes on! Everyone is welcome. “Monday is my favorite day of the week!” says Bosse. Share the fun with #BHHealthyCity.
