Special Concert Honors Pacific Serenades Founder/Artistic Director, UCLA Faculty Member Mark Carlson

After 44 years as a composer with nearly 100 completed works, acclaimed composer, UCLA alumnus, Pacific Serenades founder/artistic director and adjunct professor Mark Carlson presents a retrospective of his “lyrical, emotionally powerful, and stylistically unique” work, at 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 18 in UCLA’s Schoenberg Hall, 445 Charles E Young Dr E.

His compositions include art songs, chamber and choral music, concertos, large ensemble works, and songs for musical theater. The free concert, View From a Hilltop: Mark Carlson at 65, presented in the composer’s 65th year, features movements and songs that span his entire career. He will also offer a glimpse into future projects with an aria from his opera on The Scarlet Letter, which he is currently writing with librettist Bruce Olstad, also a UCLA alumnus.

The roster of performers on the program is exclusively Herb Alpert School of Music students, faculty, alumni and staff. “I have spent most of my adult life at UCLA, and my output as a composer is intimately linked with and has been nurtured in so many ways by my life at UCLA,” he said.

“The chamber ensemble Pacific Serenades, which I founded and have directed for 36 years, was conceived during my student days at UCLA, and my early association with faculty clarinetist Gary Gray opened up connections to other performing musicians in L.A. that I would not have had otherwise,” Carlson wrote. “Over the years, I wrote 23 pieces for Pacific Serenades, some of which are represented on this concert; they span the years from 1982-2012.”

The program will include: Batik, The Homeward Heart (mvt 2) (2010) This is the Garden (songs 1 & 2) (1987) The Scarlet Letter, Hester’s Plea (2016) Entre la sombra y el alma (2007) Cuatro sonetos de amor (songs 2 & 3) (1998) From One Who Stays (songs 3 & 5) (1992) View From a Hilltop (mvts. 3 & 2) (2009) Two pieces on speeches by John F. Kennedy (2002) Twilight (1990) From the Song of Songs I (songs 2 & 3) (1986, 1979) From the Song of Songs II (songs 2 & 4) (1992) Night Will Blossom (songs 1 & 2) (1994) An die Geliebte (2017) Patchen Songs (songs 1 & 8) (1975-76)  and Piano Quartet (1992) (mvts. 1 & 3) (1992)
