This summer’s scary shark movie took a bigger bite out of the box office than expected, as “The Meg” opened with what one analyst called “a much bigger than expected” $44.5 million debut.

The saga of marauding 75-foot-long shark, known as the Megalodon, also sold $96.8 million in tickets overseas. Studio analyst Paul Dergarabedian termed that “impressive.”

In its third weekend, number two “Mission: Impossible: Fallout” was on track for a $20 million weekend, bringing its sales total to $162 million after 17 days in theaters. Globally, it has sold $437.6 million in tickets.

“Christopher Robin” was predicted to post $12.4 million in this, its second weekend, and now has a domestic total of $50 million.

An R-rated horror-suspense film from Sony — “Slender Man” — opened to a $11.3 million debut. And Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” opened in fifth, at $10.8 million.

Rounding out the top-10 films, as projected by the studios and collated by comScore, were “The Spy Who Dumped Me” ($6.6 million), “Mamma Mia! Here We Go again” ($5.8 million), “The Equalizer 2” ($5.5 million), “Hotel Transylvania 3” ($5.1 million) and “Ant-Man And The Wasp” ($4 million).
