The pairing of Jack Black and Cate Blanchett proved to be box-office magic over the weekend as their fantasy film “The House with a Clock in its Walls” topped the competition at North American theaters, according to final figures released Monday.
Their film collected $26.6 million in its opening weekend to lead the way at theaters, according to box-office tracker comScore.
That was good enough to top Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively’s “A Simple Favor,” which placed second by earning $10.3 million between Friday and Sunday. The horror film “The Nun” took third place with $10 million, followed by the action-thriller “The Predator,” which earned $9.2 million.
“Crazy Rich Asians” continued to pad its box office numbers, collecting another $6.3 million to give it a six-week take of $159.3 million.
Rounding out the top five films of the weekend were “White Boy Rick” ($4.9 million); “Peppermint” ($3.7 million); “Fahrenheit 11/9” ($3 million); “The Meg” ($2.3 million); and “Searching” ($2.1 million).
