Joan Mangum’s Society Scene—St. John’s Celebrates ‘The Power Of Partnership’

The Saint John’s Health Center Foundation and Irene Dunne Guild’s annual Saint John’s Health Center gala, themed “The Power of Partnership.” This year honor spotlight was on the people of Saint John’s who make the difference – physicians, researchers, staff, trustees, volunteers and grateful patients – all working together to save lives.
The Beverly Hilton event featured entertainment by one of the industry’s most successful songwriters/record producers David Foster, and singer Ray Parker, Jr. with Kym Douglas serving as the evening’s host.
On hand were the Irene Dunne Guild’s gala chair Christina Arechaederra and dinner chairs Kathy and John Danhakl, Lynda Oschin and Jerry B. Epstein, Mary and Jay Flaherty, Stella Hall and Jim Fordyce, Martha and David Ho, Elizabeth and Robert Lowe, Teresita and Shelby Notkin, Dominic Ornato, and Donna Schweers and Tom Geiser.

Net proceeds will benefit vital programs, services and greatest needs within the recognized areas of excellence at Saint John’s Health Center including cancer, cardiac care, maternal and child health, men’s health, neuroscience, nursing, orthopedics, thoracic surgery and urology.

The Library Foundation of L.A. awarded its Light of Learning Award to its Council Chairman Betsy Applebaum of Beverly Hills, in ceremonies at the Intercontinental Hotel in Century City. Also honored at the annual awards event was multi-prize winning author George Saunders, who received the Literary Award.
Philanthropist Applebaum has been a tireless volunteer with the Library Foundation, serving on its board for the past 15 years and as chair or president of many of its committees. She has been a volunteer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center since she was 15 years old, and has held leadership positions at the Music Center and other organizations, plus initiating and overseeing a special education program for the BHUSD.
Saunders is the author of nine books, including the acclaimed Tenth Of December, and Lincoln In The Bardo.
The evening featured music by the Thelonious Monk Institute for Jazz while speakers included Carla J. Christofferson and Ken Brecher, chair and president of the foundation, and John Szabo, L. A. city librarian.
Among those on hand were author and honorary chair Judith Krantz, Lynn Booth and Kent Kresa, Joan Hotchkis, Alyce de Roulet Williamson, Edye and Eli Broad, Debi and Norris Bishton, Diane and John Cooke, Sandy and Larry Post, Marna and Rockwell Schnabel and Judith and Thomas Beck.
