The Los Angeles Rams 54-51 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs was Southern California’s No. 1 sports moment of 2018, the Los Angeles Sports Council announced Monday evening at the 14th annual LA Sports Awards at The Beverly Hilton.

The Nov. 19 game was a matchup of the teams with the NFL’s best records, was the third highest-scoring game in NFL history and the first NFL game where both teams scored more than 50 points.

There were five lead changes, four in the fourth quarter, and two ties in the first “Monday Night Football” game at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum since Oct. 28, 1985. The game had been scheduled for Mexico City, but was shifted to the Coliseum after NFL officials ruled that the field at Estadio Azteca did “not meet NFL standards for playability and consistency.”

Firefighters and law enforcement officers who responded to the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks and the Woolsey Fire in Ventura and Los Angeles counties were honored at the game.

In awards previously announced, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald were honored as the Sportsmen of the Year, Olympic gold medal-winning snowboarder Chloe Kim as the Sportswoman of the Year, Chargers coach Anthony Lynn as the Coach of the Year and Los Angeles Football Club President Tom Penn as the Executive of the Year.

The L.A. Sports Awards recognize the greatest moments and personalities in sports in the Los Angeles/Orange County area.
