As the Beverly Hills Unified School District plans ahead for its reconfiguration into one dedicated middle school next year, the Board of Education last week discussed ideas to revive the district’s middle school sports program.
The sports program would offer a variety of seasonal sports – flag football, girls volleyball, cross country and cheerleading in the fall; boys and girls basketball in the winter; and boys and girls soccer, track field and boys volleyball in the spring.
According to BHUSD Athletic Director Tim Ellis, the teams would compete as part of the Foundation for Interscholastic Youth Athletics (FIYA), which was founded in August 2011 and serves as a governing body for interscholastic elementary and middle school sports competitions in Los Angeles.
Ellis said the goal is to give students positive activities to engage in after school, while helping to serve as a bridge between athletics for students between middle school and Beverly Hills High.
